Some time ago I published this house that -as the Eclectic Mid-Century Modern Apartment in Amsterdam I wrote about last week- also is owned by a friend of mine: Daan.
Daan is a communication & pr consultant for a real estate company in Amsterdam and his house is really cool! He’s a thrifter/collector and, as a consequence, he furnished his apartment with several items from mid-century to the late 70s.
Last time I didn’t do a proper ‘interview’ to the owner of the apartment so this time -and that’s also why it took so long- I did it:
Hey Daan, so..since how long do you live in this apartment?
I live here since 1995 and I have no plans for moving soon. 🙂
How would you describe your style?
I’ve always liked authentic stuff and natural materials in all kind of styles. I’m interested in everything is handmade or unique; especially if they have a story to tell. Looking around my house the mid-century and the 70s are represented in the basics like the tables , the chairs, the couch and the art. But I never followed a certain style, my interior decoration just got the way it is during the time and it is still in progress because I like to collect.
What inspired you more when you had to choose the interior decoration?
The painting I bought 15 years ago in a Berliner flea market. It’s a Swedish painting from the 40s: it portraies a man reading to a woman. The style and colours have been an inspiration for my interior decoration since I got it and they still are.
Did you have a budget limit when you started to furnish your apartment?
I never had a budget -Lucky you ;)- When there is something I really like, affordable and that I think it worths the buy; I get it :). I know that sometimes I have been ripped of but I was also lucky some other time and I definitely had some bargains.
Which is you favorite part/furniture in the house?
I’m attached to several things. If I had to choose I would say my couch: it’s an Artifort from the early seventies. I got it online for 40 Euros and I had to re-cover it with the original fabric. Besides it’s very comfortable.
In which kind of shops did you buy your furnishings?
80% of my furniture come from second-hand shops, design shops, flea markets and from the internet. When I travel I always like to find something special for my house to bring back home.
Thanks Daan for sharing your precious apartment and your time! 🙂
WHICH PIECE YOU LIKE THE MOST IN DAAN’S APARTMENT? LET ME KNOW IT IN THE COMMENTS!
