Mid Century Modern Recreational Pavilion.

After updating the Richard Neutra Kaufmann house with some amazing pics from the Julius Shulman archive, I also spotted these amazing photos of a fantastic piece of mid century  modern architecture that -I thought- deserved a deeper examination.

The recreational pavilion designed by Buff, Straub and Hensman for Mr. and Mrs Mirman, won the Honor Award from the Pasadena Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 1960.

The pavillion was commissioned by the Mirmans to have an adjacent but separate equipped facility to be used as communal space for both their three children and adults activities.

The outdoor space was geared for sports and games -badminton, basketball, volleyball, a shuffleboard playground, a ping pong table, a swimming pool and a tree house- but also had a living space for social interactions.

The mid century modern open plan is separated by six rectangles of different dimensions placed side by side to provide a fluid visual throughout the whole site while the different floor levels create separated functional areas under a single roof.

It was fully equipped with built-in appliances -kitchen, bar, fireplace, barbecue and a dining table- and seatings that were permanent fixtures of a space in perfect  balance between indoor and outdoor.

The architects also found the perfect balance between affordable materials and functionality.

Two raised wooden platforms -the entry and lounge deck- were used as built-in seatings for both the courts and the lounge floating above the brick floor of the pavilion. The brick or plywood walls were placed in the corners of the primary rectangular area.

The whole structure opens to the playing court and the garden with the continuous fir ceiling being the unifying architectural element of the various activities taking place in the pavilion.

I hoped you found this house interesting, if so LET ME KNOW IN THE COMMENTS YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT IT! AND DON’T BE AFRAID TO LEAVE A LIKE BELOW 🙂
