Any ideas on fun things to do with our basement stairs?

This is our basement of our 1960 multilevel home. Recently we removed carpet, that was old and used by all our boys. My question is the stairs…any ideas on fun things to do with them? They need pulled out and rebuilt and I love the iron railings.

  • “Since you seem to like colour, get a few of your favorite paint colours and have a paint fest on the steps with colours. Then paint black over all of them. As you walk on them the black will begin to wear off and the other colours will come through.”
  • I love the idea of a floating stairway! I’m not a fan of them normally, just because I’m very uncomfortable with heights, but this is such a short stairway, I think it would add a lot visually to the space, open it up, keep it from feeling so small.”
  • “Love the railings. I like the idea of floating stairs, perhaps a reclaimed wood with a heavy lacquer to modernize it? Any tread will do. Or you could just clean these up and paint them a gorgeous green or deep red and then paint the railings a light color to make them pop.
  • “Gold or orange shag just the stairs like you’re walking on moss.”
  • “Replace with cantilever black metal.”
  • “Floating stairs are really cool, but if you have pets, they won’t like them. Carpet tiles would be cool on your stairs. “
