The Wood in my Great Room Looks Dry

Help with Midcentury wooden paneling

We just closed on our MCM home. The house needs some love. I’m hoping you can help me with the wood walls and ceilings. We have the original plans and the architect specified cedar for the exterior but just “wood” on the interior. The wood is beautiful but looks dry. What should I use on them?

Our facebook group had lots of tips.

  • “Clean the wood with warm water and a drop of soap to clean and degrease. Let dry and apply 1-2 coats of oil. Mentally prepare yourself that the wood will be darker. We used starbrite teak oil for our redwood walls. Use a roller… it helps speed things up!
  • “I used a sponge mop cleaned first with Murphy’s oil and then used a wood floor cleaning mop and Howard’s orange oil.
  • “We’ve used tung oil on ours because we like the matte finish. Just wiped it on with a rag..”
  • “Hemp oil.”
  • “Teak oil.”
  • “Orange oil.”
  • “Please don’t paint the wood…”
