Looking for flooring ideas

We’re about to renovate and are looking for flooring ideas that will complement and not overwhelm the stunning ceiling. We’re thinking a timber floor lighter in color than the existing tiles, but would love to hear and see any other suggestions.

Members of our facebook group for midcentury home owners were happy to help.

Below are some examples of members thoughts on the topic. These are only a few of the thousands of tips that are shared in our exclusive Facebook Group dedicated to midcentury modern home owners. If you own a midcentury house and are not already a member, join us now!

  • “Terrazzo – it will brighten the space… help reflect light… it will also marry the darker ceiling colour to the floor.”
  • “We are in a similar situation and planning on polished concrete.”
  • “Try looking at extra large porcelain tile that looks like concrete. Saves huge on the budget. Wood will compete and most likely wasn’t used when it was built.”
  • “I’d price terrazzo look tiles if I were you. ESPECIALLY in the kitchen.”
  • “I think wood floor will compete with the wood ceiling. So go with terrazzo or stone look tile or stone. Or cork or vinyl tile. Just not more wood. Let the ceiling have its own moment.”
  • “I just selected terrazzo tile 24” x 24”. And i suggest any material chosen should be a colour different than the wood ceiling. A great space needs contrasts.”
  • “Great house. But I think it would be too much wood. Plus two different woods sometimes look awkward together. We have 24×24 white porcelain tile. I also think some type of tile that mimics terrazzo would look in credible.
  • “I love cork. But I like the wood idea too. Although intuitively light wood doesn’t sound good to me… matching the ceiling, or close sounds better. I personally don’t think it would be overwhelming as some do because it seems like a bright space and you don’t have (natural) wood cabinets. All white cabinets would make our very striking. I’m not a fan of ceramic tile in kitchens. In my former house I had ceramic tile on and when I dropped anything breakable, it would shatter into smithereens and go ALL over the place! In my current house, I have cork, and sure, things break but doesn’t seem as catastrophic.”
  • “We laid terrazzo look tiles and they are in a soft and natural colour so do t take over the room at all. There are good and bad imitations so look around. Ours are 600×600. By having ceramic version of terrazzo it’s affordable and also no sealing or ongoing maintenance like the real thing. This way it will let your ceiling sing. Timber on the floor I think would be way too much. And if you have MCM timber furniture as well.”
  • “Gorgeous home. Love the ceilings. I want to do mine the same. It kills me when people renovate a house especially a beautiful mid century and they pick some in stock beige/brown contractor tile to put on the floor. It’s probably beautiful concrete underneath the tile. Cork would be fabulous.”
