Ideas for outdoor light fixtures

We bought our house six years ago. We renovated completely the indoors in 2018 and last year we started the renovation outdoors. We are dressing the outside of the house with copper. I’m wondering what kind of outdoor light fixtures we should buy next to the garage door. I want to keep it as midcentury as possible and they need to resist very cold and freezing winters.

Members of our facebook group for midcentury home owners were happy to help.

Below are some examples of members thoughts on the topic. These are only a few of the thousands of tips that are shared in our exclusive Facebook Group dedicated to midcentury modern home owners. If you own a midcentury house and are not already a member, join us now!

  • “Black would look good with the copper now and when it ages. These are sealed against weather and led so more impervious to cold temperatures. They are reasonably priced. You will have two to use and two for backup when these eventually stop working. I have eight on the exterior of my MCM home and love them.”
  • “I love that you’re making your home look more era appropriate using a contemporary solution! Most people seem to be doing the opposite and turning their MC home’s contemporary modern.
  • “That is really cool! I’d say something in a black finish with both up and down lighting.”
  • “It needs to be a material that will look good as the copper changes color.”
  • “It looks like there is a light above the front door – perhaps consider leaving the garage lights off so as to direct the eye to the human-door vs the car-door? Perhaps then also some bollard lights or landscape lighting along the driveway to complement. The copper is awesome.”
  • “So cool! Though silver is the most common for MCM I think you need a strong matte black to hold its own with the very strong copper. I think the silver will seem sort of wimpy up against that beautiful copper. Up down lights would be ideal to keep the style in line. Have you thought about just up lighting the house with low voltage landscape lighting to feature the copper at night? You could up light either side of the “garage door”. Then do a sconce near the front or some sort of MCM ceiling/chandelier over the door for artistic fun.”
  • “Great house. But I think it would be too much wood. Plus two different woods sometimes look awkward together. We have 24×24 white porcelain tile. I also think some type of tile that mimics terrazzo would look in credible.
  • ” I vote black fixtures – cylindrical comes to mind, or black fixtures with globes.”
