3 Contemporary Houses Proving Modernism’s Lasting Significance

Despite its name, modernism is a rather old style now, over a century old in fact. Yet today, the lessons it offers for designers are as pertinent as aver.

Here we have gathered together three contemporary designs which have drawn heavily on the modernist design lexicon: the minimalist Olnick Spanu House situated on the Hudson River, elevating its occupiers through its Arte Povera art; Long Dune by Hammer Architects, draing heavily in its furnishing and general aesthetic on the simplicity of Danish Modern design; and the Lauriston House, in close communication with its surroundings through its natural, locally-sourced materials and curved roof.

1. Lauriston House’s Curvy Roof Perfectly Captures its Surroundings

Curves are the first thing that comes to mind when looking at the Lauriston House. Or more specifically, the curves of that remarkable roof. Completed in 2016 and situated in the Kyneton in the Australian state of Victoria, the house was designed by Seeley Architects.

2. Long Dune by Hammer Architects – Danish Simplicity

The elegant simplicity of Danish modern design is everywhere to see in the Long Dune Residence. Designed by Hammer Architects, and completed in 2014, the house is situated in Truro, MA, United States, although it wouldn’t look out of place nestled in amongst a Scandinavian fjord.

3. The Olnick Spanu House: A Tribute to Modernism

The Olnick Spanu House resides in an environment of conspicuous calm. Completed in 2008 by the architect Alberto Cambo Baeza, its principal view offers a panoramic scene of the Hudson River snaking its way through the New York countryside. Yet when viewed from the lake that it overlooks, the house is barely perceptible amongst the trees. It is a brief anomaly on a hill covered in forest, a delicate beauty spot.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
