Located in the hills above Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, and nestled among the swanky 1960’s tract development known as the Trousdale Estates, Leslie Lane Residence is a remodel with an attempt to capture and enhance the true spirit of the regional mid-century movement.

The extensive remodel of the one-story house by Assembledge+ involved expanding the existing space to emphasize open living plan and supplementing the mid-century elements with contemporary aesthetics. The addition involved pulling the roof all the way around and constructing a new wing featuring guest bedrooms and a double garage.

A heavy roof, acting as a sun protection, shelters and marks the entry to the house which connects the arrival area with the living room. The glass door and glass wall built on the left side to the entrance opens the indoor area to both sides of the house, creating a sense of transparency and openness.

The new kitchen takes cues from the original layout while taking on a lighter color palette to contrast against predominantly timber interior palette throughout the rest of the house.

New cane fronted joinery is seen in the dining and living areas, deferring to the material of original joinery, including storage, a TV unit and a wall hung buffet.

Indoors, the open floor plan connects the living area, family room, kitchen, and a dining area that is elevated by a few steps. The walls of sliding glass spill the kitchen, living area and the master bedroom into the large grassy yard and pool, blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The master bathroom features a custom-made resin bathtub and sink, and a slotted skylight which floods the place with natural light.

A minimalist palette of terrazzo floors, stainless steel columns and walnut kitchen cabinets, brings a sense of warmth to the space and assists in bringing this vintage house into the 21st century living.
