Help on deciding on a paint scheme for my home

House trim

We currently have blue-gray with brown trim (which we don’t like). We’re thinking all black or all white. Opinions and suggestions welcome.

  • “I had a white house, on a wooded lot once…two of the trees were mulberries. Huge mistake. Had to have the tree removed and the house painted after the first summer. Birds and berries and honestly all the tree droppings and splatters around the foundation, just wasn’t worth the aneurysm over trying to keep it clean.”
  • “The blue-gray blends best with the natural surroundings. The black and white are too unnatural looking. Maybe try a dark green or brown if you don’t like the blue gray.
  • “Dark gray (cool) with a warm wood accent is classic! Black over white if I had to choose but paint maintenance on black is a whole other level. Be ready!”
  • “I would also suggest a dark grey or brown, something less harsh but still dramatic. It’s a beautiful house.”
  • “Rather than stark extremes of black or white, and especially given the muted stone color of the courtyard, consider a darker palette, but with tones such as charcoal, deep sage, soft navy, charcoal brown….”
  • “I like the look you have now. It is a nice compliment to the landscaping. Black and white are so trendy and over used right now. A dark taupe would look good.”
  • “I like both…maybe since you are in a wooded area the black? If that house was surrounded by palm trees I would have gone for the white hands down. Currently struggling with this same problem on what color(s) to choose for my exterior.”
  • I like it now! But, all-black (or dark in general…) in cold climates and white in the desert is my fast and easy guideline. Some other dark options to consider: a dark green/black, deep olive green, Usonian red, or earth brown. Good luck!
  • “Not white. I don’t mind your current setup, but otherwise I’d go with black. I like that your dark blue give you a more sophisticated two-tone look compared to a monolithic black. Here’s a pic of my place where we have a cool-tone dark gray with lighter gray accent on the trim. Looks somewhat purple in this shot, which is not accurate. But, anyway, I like the subtle two-tone look.”
  • “The rectilinear architecture is in complete contrast to its beautiful natural surroundings. I think the contrast should be celebrated and black would be best. I don’t think it should “blend” as it is a total man-made object. Let it be that and let the natural surroundings stand out as such. Plus, that black is really elegant!”
