Time and again, we are blown away by the incredible transformations of homes brought back to life through thoughtful renovations. Case in point: The Malibu House.

Located on the Point Dume peninsula in Malibu, California, this coastal retreat was reimagined through a collaboration between architect Barbara Bestor of Bestor Architecture and musician Mike D—Michael Diamond of the Beastie Boys. Together, they turned a set of crumbling structures into a vibrant, light-filled beach-style vacation home.

The property originally featured a three-bedroom house loosely connected to small guest cottages. Drawn to the nearby secluded beach, Mike D enlisted long-time friend Barbara Bestor to lead the architectural design while he curated the interiors. The shared vision was to rehabilitate the rundown buildings into a comfortable and contemporary retreat for his family.

The renovation elevated the central portion of the home and reconfigured spaces to create a larger living area connected to the terrace and backyard. A standard gabled roof was replaced with a striking butterfly roof, adding character and openness to the design.

Inside, concrete floors and white walls form a calm backdrop, while bold accents introduce vibrancy. A bright yellow front door, a deep blue sofa, and matching details infuse the interiors with playful energy, echoing the surrounding ocean views.

Large windows, skylights, and expansive sliding doors invite natural light throughout, creating a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors. Painted wooden doors in pale blue extend this breezy aesthetic, while consistent upholstery fabrics tie the exterior and interior spaces together.

Set amid Malibu’s coastal beauty, with ocean air, rocky coves, and nearby hiking trails, The Malibu House embodies the ideal California lifestyle: relaxed, modern, and deeply connected to its natural surroundings.
