Would You Paint a Wooden Ceiling?

We’re doing a home renovation this fall. I wanted to paint the ceiling but now I’d like to keep it the same. I’m not sure with what to do for the flooring (we currently have carpet)? Also, we took off the wood bench/hearth a couple years ago and I feel like we are completely messing up our house. I have so much to learn! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

?? Do not paint your ceiling, please. What needs do you have for your floor in terms of ease of cleaning, purpose, use, insulation & noise factors?

?? Definitely do not paint that! I would suggest white walls to keep things bright and a matching colored hardwood (if you go that route) or a matching brown, mustard or olive green carpet/area rug to compliment that beautiful ceiling .

?? Keep your ceilings as is! They are wonderful. Here are mine. We are thinking of getting terrazzo like porcelain flooring throughout home with cork or carpet in bedrooms.

?? Large stone look tile. I have a similar ceiling, stone fireplace and did a large Italian porcelain black tile that looks like stone but is super easy to keep clean.

?? 1. Put the bench back. 2. DON’T paint the ceiling. 3. Refer to old MCM photos for appropriate floor material. 4. Leave everything else in the house alone! These homes were designed by professionals who already thought through everything from function and design perspectives. Good luck!

?? As a historic house specialist, focus on restoration not renovation. Clean and preserve what you have. What is under the carpet? If it’s hardwood, refinish, if it’s sub-flooring, think about installing 2” oak flooring and stain natural to medium (blonde to auburn).
