So after 65 years it’s time to remodel or restore or 1953 glass block shower and floor – we want to keep all the original wall tile, toilet, tub and sinks. It’s a dilemma since the house is all intact from 1953 including the original built in bar. Help!

  • “What are your plans for the rest of the house? Are you keeping it a time capsule or planning some updates to modernize it a little? If you are updating, I suggest updating the surround. I can only imagine what a pain in the butt those blocks must be to clean and keep clean especially with all that grout!
  • “Not a great lover of pink tiles but they are so in keeping with the era. I love that shower enclosure and think the bathroom deserves to live on . Renovate what’s there, it’s amazing.”
  • “Are you hoping to make a larger shower? If so, I would suggest going very simple. All glass enclosure. Chrome finishes. Pink tiles.
  • “It’s wonderful!!! Carefully dismantle, clean thoroughly in the best & safest way possible then put it back together. Check salvage for period correct black blocks- new mixed in will be hard to match up & look odd. It’s not only unique but unique to your home. Everything there looks like it just needs a deeper cleansing. If hard water is an issue consider an in line system even if it’s just for this bathroom.”
  • “I would keep the shower as it would no doubt be one of the features that drew me to the house! Personally, I’d lose all the pink tiles, replace with a green multi color mosaic that had the same green in it, paint the walls white, see if vanity can be stripped to wood, and replace the floor- probably to wood or white tile.”
  • “Just STOP. StOP what you are doing right this instant. Walk outside and just forget the whole thing even crossed your mind!”
