Kitchen remodel advice

We have decided to do a full kitchen remodel. Do we scrap these 1970’s Poggenpohl cabinets? Or somehow sell them to someone who can refinish them and use them? Some of the tracks on the drawers need repair but 90% of them are good. Thoughts?

Members of our facebook group for midcentury home owners were happy to help.

Below are some examples of members thoughts on the topic. These are only a few of the thousands of tips that are shared in our exclusive Facebook Group dedicated to midcentury modern home owners. If you own a midcentury house and are not already a member, join us now!

  • “Whoa! That’s a lot of black cabinet right there. If they’re quality and still work well, I think just a different colour and pulls would look fantastic. I love the ceilings and I really love the view.”
  • “They do not need replacing. Be proud of a sustainable kitchen!”
  • “I think they’re cool. Love the contrast. Better quality than what is made nowadays. We ended up repainting our originals after costing out the new stuff.”
  • “They’re so beautiful… can’t imagine you could find something better unless you spend A LOT of money. It’s be a shame to replace these with ikea.”
  • “They look FAB. and totally MCM appropriate. I would never get rid of those.”
  • “The cabinets are great. All this kitchen needs is new appliances and maybe a paint job.
  • “Contact the manufacturer. It’s still a high end cabinetry company. They may sell replacement doors and end panels. Check with semihandmade and other companies that make slab doors and end panels to fit IKEA panels. They may be able to retrofit yours.”
  • “I absolutely love this kitchen. I would invest in new appliances, sink, and faucet and maybe countertops/ backsplash and call it a day.”
  • “Keep them! I would strip them and re stain in a colour closer to the ceiling! New appliances and gorgeous funky backsplash.”
  • “I would keep them. If you replace them, you won’t find as good of style or quality. I’m not a fan of black, so I would step and return to a wood finish or paint them.”
  • “I thought this kitchen was the AFTER picture. I LOVE this kitchen!”
  • “I’d sell them. They’re cool but the wrong style and finish is too dark if you’re doing a mcm look.”
  • “You cannot replace Poggenpohl with anything but Poggenpohl. Anything else will leave you extremely disappointed. Had them in the past and would love to have them again. Currently building a custom home, builder is using the best local cabinet maker in Austin. Told her we’ve had Poggenpohl in the past and she said “Oh, that’s the Rolls Royce of cabinets.”
